Track Your Bag by Airline: Every U.S. Carrier's Tools

Baggage Finder Updated April 2026 6 min read

There are three ways to track a checked bag: the airline’s own app or tracking page, your WorldTracer file reference number from the baggage service desk, and an Apple AirTag share link if you dropped a tracker in your suitcase. The right tool depends on the carrier and how far the bag has drifted from its flight path.

The three ways to track a checked bag

The airline app or tracking URL. Delta, United, and American publish passenger-facing bag trackers that pull live data from their handling systems. Delta’s and American’s are the most complete — both scan bags at check-in, loading, and the carousel. Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska, Spirit, and Frontier route status requests through their apps or baggage service phone lines instead of a public tracking page. The app is usually the fastest view while the bag is still with the airline.

The WorldTracer file reference number. Once a bag is reported missing at the Baggage Service Office, it enters WorldTracer — the global tracing system SITA and IATA operate across 500+ airlines and roughly 2,800 airports. [1] Your reference number follows the format AAABBNNNNN (airport code, airline code, five digits). That number is the key to every status check, across every carrier, until the bag is returned. For filing mechanics, see file a missing bag report.

Apple AirTag Share Item Location. If an AirTag is inside the bag, you can create a sharing link in the Find My app and send the tracked location to airline baggage staff for up to seven days. [2] United was the first U.S. carrier to accept these links, and more than 50 airlines worldwide now do. [5] Paste the link into the airline’s delayed bag form or show it at the desk. A Samsung SmartTag or Tile has no equivalent airline integration — you have to show the app screen informally.

The legacy carriers (Delta, United, American) invested in passenger-facing tracking because their mishandling volumes are larger and their operations more complex. Low-cost carriers like Spirit and Frontier run leaner baggage teams and route status questions through a single phone line — which means your WorldTracer reference number matters more, not less. [14]

When tracking fails: escalation paths

A tracker that has not updated in 24 hours is a signal, not a verdict. Bags commonly sit untracked between a missed connection and a rebooking flight, and WorldTracer will keep running automatic matches in the background. [1] Still, if the status has not moved:

Call the baggage service line directly. Have your WorldTracer reference number and your flight number ready. Ask the agent to pull the record and tell you the last station that scanned your bag. A human can see notes the public tracker does not show.

Share your AirTag location, if you have one. If you are on United, Delta, American, or another airline in the AirTag partner program, create a Share Item Location link and add it to your open report. [2] The airline can then see the bag’s location on an interactive map without you reading coordinates over the phone.

Escalate to Central Baggage Resolution. Most airlines route unresolved cases to a central team after 5 days. Ask explicitly for that handoff — frontline agents do not always offer it.

Refile if the reference number has gone cold. If the airline tells you they have no record, go back through file a missing bag report and insist on a new PIR. After the carrier’s search window closes (typically 5 to 21 days), the bag is officially lost and the claim becomes a compensation claim — see when a bag is declared lost.
